ESPN NFL insider John Clayton does not know who the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals will be, but he told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Thursday he believes Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has a good shot.

"I honestly think it could be Mike McCoy," he said. "When you look at it, Mike McCoy is probably the hottest of the assistant coaches."

McCoy, who interviewed with the Cardinals last Saturday, is looked at as one of the top assistant coaches ready to make the leap to the head job.

An assistant on the Carolina Panthers' staff from 2000-2008, the Broncos hired McCoy to run their offense in 2008. He's credited for being able to get the most out of the talent he has to work with on offense, which has to be intriguing to a team like Arizona.

"He was able to work so well with Peyton Manning and he's done so well when he worked with Jake Delhomme," continued Clayton. "He's ready, and so he would be the hottest guy.

"When you start to handicap it, knowing that they have a good chance to go to the Super Bowl or at the very least they're going to be in the championship game, you have to wait for Mike McCoy."

And therein lies the rub with regards to McCoy. While a team like the Cardinals may want him and he may want the Cardinals, he cannot go anywhere until the Broncos are eliminated from the playoffs. And as the AFC's top seed, there is a good chance they'll be playing in Super Bowl XLVII.

Was Todd Haley interviewing for the AZ Cardinals' head coach position? Will Whiz end up coaching the Cleveland Browns? Is Tim Tebow's NFL career over?
But as Clayton said, the Cardinals might be one of the few teams that can afford to wait on someone like McCoy. After all, with defensive coordinator Ray Horton already in the fold, there wouldn't be pressure to quickly hire a capable coaching staff.

"If you have the defensive staff in place and you know what you want to try to do on offense, then I think you're in a position to get Mike McCoy," Clayton said. "I think Mike McCoy is the leader in the clubhouse if this team is willing to wait."

    Thats whats up...
Horton had a real good shot when it leaked that he reached out to Norv Turner about the OC position, but that was blasted with Chud getting the Cleveland job and him getting Turner to join him. I like McCoy as the HC though. Time will tell.

I definitely think it is telling that we havent already signed Horton. If he was truly our guy, the interviews would have happened and we would have signed him. I get testing the field and waiting on some guys to interview, but if you know you have your guy you dont wait. The way I see it, Horton knows this as well and him sitting with the Bidwells at the fiesta bowl was their way of trying to smooth it over with him to keep him as D-Co.

The Cards interviewed Horton twice for the HC position. They also had talks with McCoy, Gruden, and HAley. Horton isnt going anywhere unless another team offers him the HC job. He's under contract to be Cards DC for another year and cant leave to make a lateral move. IMO the defense will be fine whoever the DC its the HC & OC that has their work cut out for them.

    Clarification
I wasnt saying they were trying to smooth it over in order to make him stay, but no one wants an employee that feels betrayed or one that is angered for being passed over for a promotion.

    Agree w/MMM
If Horton were the HC choice, it probably would have been done by now since they've already talked with him twice and talked with McCoy almost a week ago. If McCoy is the guy, they do have to wait for the playoffs to be over for Denver to pull the string. Unless they really wanted to hear how Gruden interviewed yesterday (and Haley for that matter). Horton's options for an HC job are dwindling - I think Philly, Jacksonville and AZ are the only openings left, right??

    If McCoy IS the guy
I believe he'd weather the storm that is the Arizona Offense and deliver a promising future for the Cardinals. Apparently, the only sense of urgency that AZ has been showing, is NOT jumping the gun and signing just anybody, which I applaud. They're doing their homework, gathering additional data with other candidates' ideas, which they can then emulate and utilize later on if need be. Advantage Cardinals. I'd bet they are waiting for more teams to get knocked out of the playoffs to either snag McCoy, or interview additional candidates.

Just don't mess with the Defense
I heard on the radio this morning that the 8 teams left in the playoffs are among the to 12 in points allowed. If you look at that stat for the cards (357 points allowed) and remove the 44 points given up by the offense (8 pick 6's or funbles returned for TD's) adn then exclude the Seatle game - the cards would have averaged 17 points per game given up. Thats top 2-3 in the league and wouldn't take much offense of be a contender. For this alone I would make Horton the guy.

    Not sure how I feel
He might be a good choice, I really don't know enough about him. What I do know is Horton is well respected with this staff and with the players. He smart, he's a leader and folks listen to him. Hard not to root for Horton getting the job.
