The Arizona Cardinals have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Whisenhunt coached six years for the Cardinals, compiling a 45-51 record, including two NFC West division titles and the franchise's one and only trip to the Super Bowl.

Several of Whisenhunt's assistants have also been let go by the team. Russ Grimm (Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line), Mike Miller (Offensive Coordinator), Chad Grimm (Offensive Quality Control), John McNulty (Quarterbacks), Frank Reich (Wide Receivers) and Tommie Robinson (Running Backs).

Tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens and special teams coach Kevin Spencer were not affected by the firings.

No changes have been made with the defensive assistants to this point.

Under Whisenhunt, the Cardinals struggled following the retirement of quarterback Kurt Warner after the 2009 season. In the three seasons that followed consecutive playoff berths, the Cardinals went 18-30 while starting six different quarterbacks.

In 2012, the Cardinals suffered their worst loss in franchise history, a 58-0 drubbing at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14.

The Cardinals have also suffered losing streaks in each of the last three seasons of at least six games, including a nine-game skid this season.

Whisenhunt had one year remaining on his contract.

The search for a new coach (and general manager) begins with the new year, and Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton, a hot coaching commodity around the league, would seem to have the early inside track on landing the head coaching post with the Cardinals.

Horton's defense ranked 12th in the league in yards allowed and 17th in points allowed this season.

Whisenhunt was one of seven NFL head coaches relieved of their duties Monday. The others were Philadelphia's Andy Reid, Buffalo's Chan Gailey, Cleveland's Pat Shurmur, San Diego's Norv Turner, Chicago's Lovie Smith and Kansas City's Romeo Crennel.

    Now get Haley back.
Haley was the one that we should have never let go. I think he would come back as oc and assistant hc. We need to give Horton a shot and I agree that Denny Green would be a great GM, good call 1stalarm. Green did draft and bring in great talent. Whisenhunt caused this himself with three years of qb botchery, "he had to go" players dont quit on great coaches and Whisenhunt wasn't great at all. After losing Warner I realized that WHIZ rode his arm and enginuity all the way to the Super Bowl. This past season was the worst season for me as a life long Bird fan.

    Ray Horton? Really
What makes him such a great choice for HC? The defense finished middle of the pack. There are so many better options out there then him. Cardinals need someone who can develop the offense. Not a one hit wonder like Horton.

    Coach Whis
Ken Whisenhunt was able to take what Denny Green built and help take them to the next level. For that he should be commended. Since then it has been all down hill. He took a young, immature but talented Matt Leinart and rather than coaching him, teaching him how to be a professional player in the NFL, he beat the kid till he failed, both personally and professionally. He put Leinart; a West Coast QB into a vertical passing game which had no chance of success. By the time he let Leinart go, Leinart was a shell of himself for which he has not recovered from since.

    Evaluate talent
I am willing to see what the new HC says about our QB's if Kolb, Skelton and Lindley all stay so be it. Based on our Oline performance it would be hard to grade out any of our QB's. What amazed me is Whiz's lack of understanding how the mind of a player works. Confidence is HUGE for any player QB's in particular and Whiz's way of doing things destroyed players confidence. I think Whiz will be back in the future as an Offensive Coordinator, he will have to work his way back to HC.

    Coach Whis (Cont).
All successful coaches are able to put their egos aside and assemble his team off of his teams strengths....Whis was not able to do that after Warner and the results show that. For all of the Denny Green naysayers, one thing the guy did well was pick talent. Whis will get another job, he will not starve. I hope the Cards are able to bring in a good match. Would like to see Green as a GM, but will never happen IMO.

    Had to go
Sorry to see Whiz go but it HAD to go. He hasn't developed a QB, he drafted on best player available at all x's instead of need, & it will cost him his job. He has taken a good team & made it mediocre. He negotiated in his extension to have control over the 53 man roster. He only sees it from a HC's view which is on film & the field instead of a GM who sees the picture from 10,000 feet up. As soon as he got control we've taken steps back.

    The right move....
Whiz has thrown coaches & players under the bus many times. He's stubborn with mediocre head coaching skills. Final straw-benching Beanie who loses a fumble only 1 in every 125 carries, which is better than Foster,Peterson,& other top RBs. His leg is almost snapped in half causing him to fumble & Whiz treats him as if he committed murder. Meanwhile, Ryan "the annointed one" Williams loses a fumble 1 in every 54 carries. Beanie should be carrying the ball when he's healthy - period. And guess what? It looks like Whiz is leaving town before Beanie. You know what they say about paybacks!

AZ is not an attractive job
...so don't get your hopes up. I could even see Horton moving to a better situation that has a QB.
