Ken Whisenhunt's first game as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals came in a loss to the 49ers in San Francisco.

Did his final game with the club come with the same result against the same team in the same place?

Arizona falling in its season finale by a score of 27-13 Sunday was in no way a surprise.

Hell, the team finishing the season with a 5-11 mark isn't that surprising, especially when you figure eight of 12 Arizona Sports 620 personalities pegged the Cardinals to finish with six or fewer wins this season.

Six times since moving to Arizona have the Cardinals finished a season 5-11, and six more times have they finished a game or two worse than that. Yet, this 5-11 season feels worse than any of those.

The 2012 Cardinals started the season with a 4-0 record.

The 2012 Cardinals have a playoff-caliber defense.

The 2012 Cardinals have talented players dotted all throughout the roster.

None of that mattered.

The 2012 Cardinals are as big of a mess as any previous iteration, with a league-worst offense and a handful of veteran leaders and key players finding their way into Whisenhunt's doghouse.

Adrian Wilson and Darnell Dockett both caught Whisenhunt's ire this season for different reasons, as did John Skelton and Beanie Wells.

Whether it was from mouthing off like Wells, ineffective play like Wilson and Skelton, or for whatever it was Dockett actually did in New York, the fact is the coach tried to send a message via his most important players.

It didn't work as the mistakes, poor play and losses continued.

In fact, nothing Whisenhunt did this year worked, and it's why the Cardinals, for the second time in three years, finished a season with just five wins, which just so happens to be, according to ESPN Stats & Info, a record in futility.

"We just got to continue to get some guys back healthy, continue to eliminate mistakes and we can be a good football team," Whisenhunt told the Arizona Cardinals radio network after the final loss of the season.

If only it was that simple, because it obviously is not.

Every team has injuries and every player makes mistakes.

But most teams don't suffer the type of season-crippling losing streaks the Cardinals have.

So now the Cardinals have some decisions to make, and they're likely to be made by the time 2013 arrives. The direction the franchise chooses to go will have ramifications for many years to come.

Keep Whisenhunt -- on a one-year deal, no less -- and risk losing defensive coordinator Ray Horton to another team. Also say goodbye to the likes of Dockett, Wells and probably Wilson.

Part with the coach of the last six years, though, and take a risk that you can't actually do better than the only man to ever lead the organization to the Super Bowl.

Can the Cardinals do better than Whisenhunt? We don't know the answer to that question.

What we do know, however, is Whisenhunt has a 45-51 record in Arizona, and has compiled a mark of 18-30 in the three years since Kurt Warner retired. In that time not only have the Cardinals lost their fair share of games, but they've also lost considerable ground in the NFC West.

San Francisco? Better.

Seattle? Better.

St. Louis? Better.

A common thread among the three teams who finished ahead of Arizona in division this season is that each hired a new coach in the time since the Cardinals last finished at the top.

The Cardinals should not only take note, but also follow suit.

    Don't have any faith
Can't see M. Bidwill pulling the trigger. He seems pretty loyal to Whiz. And even if he did I don't have any faith in who he would pick to replace. If he wanted Horton he would have already done it a few weeks ago.

I don't have a problem with keeping Whiz for his final year of his contract. This would save the cards money and unless you are willing to replace him with someone better, what's the point? I would like to see Rod Graves fired. Since we can't get rid of the Bidwell's, we must start just below them. I would also like to see an experienced OC come here to work with Whiz. Get rid of the internal cancer(s), and draft/trade/sign a qb, rb, and offensive linemen.

    I beg to differ
Wilson cant cover any more, so changing his playing time is in no way putting him in the dog house. Dockett put himself before the team in refusing to let a score happen giving the team the only chance possible to score. And Wells fumbled on the goal line without anyone touching him. Team was devistated by inept Qback paly by Skelton and Lindley and in injuries on the Oline. The play of the Qbacks aggravated the Oline problems. With barely adequate Qback play by Kolb we were 4-0, even with the Oline performing at its worse.

    Probably keep Whiz
Unless you are going after Andy Reid I don't see it. Who is out there that is better? Harbaugh couldn't win with the Cardinal QBs

    Whiz
I don't see the Bidwell's letting Whiz go. I personally hope they don't. Who would they replace him with besides Andy Reid who would be wanting more money than Whiz. It's obvious that Groves, Grimm, and Miller need to go. I personally don't see anyone better than Whiz at this time.

    Keep Whisenhunt
Sorry I meant Graves, Grimm, and Miller need to go. Keep Whiz and make Horton the assistant head coach. The only way I see Whiz leaving is if he doesn't want to give up full control which is in his contract. Here's what I see happening ... Whiz head coach, Horton assistant head coach and bring in someone like Haley or Norv Turner to completely run the offense. I also wouldn't doubt that Steve Keim will take over Rod Graves job.

    @ Adam
Wells & Wilson's departure isn't on Whiz. Beanie just flat out needs to go and Adrian's playing time has come to an end. Yes, Dockett may be gone but not sure. They already let Heap go and Stewart Bradley should be next. We also have other players that need to go. One other scenario that I could see Whiz being let go is if they definately DO NOT want to lose Horton.

    Keep Whiz?
If they keep Whiz, then just sit yourself down to another year of Cardinal football like the last three. Another year of meaningless redundant press conferences, with him laying it off on the players, refusing personal responsibility. How's that workin for ya? Players with outstanding years last year, are now "the problem"? We need a coach the players can play for & a scheme that actually works! Whiz MUST go.

    Interesting
These comments that Whisenhunt just needs a good QB. Who in the heck do they think picked these QB's? Also the team signs Kolb for 65 mil and then Whisenhunt puts doubt in his head by making it open competition in training camp. He starts Skelton and it turns out that Kolb is a much better QB. I would like to know what the players really think of their HC, he plays head games way to much.

    Whiz to blame for QBs
I keep hearing people say that if "insert coach" had these QBs then they also wouldn't win. In reality they wouldn't have these QBs since they would of been better prepared. Look at Reid - He drafted Foles in the 3rd round and they were set on Vick. Whiz wasn't set on Skelton or Kolb and didn't draft a QB until the 6th round.
