The Arizona Cardinals will wrap up their season Sunday in San Francisco.

Come Monday, Ken Whisenhunt's tenure as the team's head coach may end, too.

Barring an upset against the 49ers the Cardinals will finish the season with a 5-11 record -- their second such mark in the last three seasons -- with many believing the only coach to lead the franchise to the Super Bowl will be out of work.

Included in that group is NFL.com's Adam Schein, who wrote a piece about what is known as "Black Monday".

Whisenhunt is a very good coach. If Arizona had held on to beat Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLIII, there would be a Ken Whisenhunt statue outside of the Cardinals' stadium. Personally, I wouldn't fire Whisenhunt.

But this season has been an embarrassment. The quarterback situation is between sad and laughable, and Whisenhunt hasn't handled it well. The no-show against the Seattle Seahawks was alarming. They are wasting Larry Fitzgerald and a talented defense.

The educated guess: Whisenhunt is let go, and defensive coordinator Ray Horton takes over as head coach.

The common theme from most "experts" is that Whisenhunt is a good coach who has done a poor job the last few years. His first three years in the desert led to 27 wins and two playoff appearences, while his last three have seen the team win just 18 games. In all, Whisenhunt has a 45-50 mark with the Cardinals.

why did the Rooney's pass on him?
Guess the Steeler FO knew something we didn't - and now we do. Maybe our SB run was due more to Haley/Warner than Whisenhunt. Watching Whiz's stubborn arrogance this year has destroyed any confidence I had in him. Wouldn't matter what QB we brought in, Whiz & his imcompetent coaching staff (on the offensive side) would destroy him. He's a QB killer.

Many head coaches fail their first jobs
Many need the experience to learn from and do better the second time around. Look at Belichick, Fox, Coughlin, etc. It's very possible that if Whiz is fired that he could go on to do a good job somewhere else if he's capable of learning from his mistakes as those other coaches likely did. (Of course, those other coaches also have a franchise QB...) The question will be whether the organization believes that Whiz can learn from those mistakes here or not.

    He excelled
with Dennis Green's offense. Any structure that was to be put into place by him has failed. Tremendously. He lucked out with Big Ben and the fact he inherited Dennis Greens team.

    Maybe
I think Dennis Green should be our GM, Ray Horton as our HC, Haley as his OC / HC, & bring in one of Horton's old homies as a DC.

    Whiz has to go
He will learn from his mistakes. But he wont be a good HC anytime soon. There will be a team that will hire him as a TE coach or OC first. Then, if he proves something, he'll get another shot as as HC. He has a lot to learn. The team is ready now. Just needs a offensive mastermind to commit to changing personnel and the way we attack defenses. Because Whiz's system failed miserably. It literally needs a hall of fame QB to succeed. If we dont have a hall of fame QB, its not going to work. Theres other ways to attack a defense than passing all the time.

Fickle fans need to sit down and shut up
Whisenhunt is a good coach. Best the Cardinals had had in some time. Teams that are winning, paid to get there. The Cards owners are tight with their money. That's ok. Their business model is a good one. Games are sold out. TV revenue in the league is high. Relax. The defense is a very good one. They will now concentrate on the offense. Hopefully the O-line. Maybe their O-line coach needs to go. Great players aren't usually great coaches.

Finally someone with a brain offers their opinion. Agree with everything you said. Retards like FitzIsMyHero have no idea what they're talking about. Whiz will be re-hired as a HC (IF he's fired) immediately. He's one of the best in the league. Arizona fans are just too dumb to realize that.

Stop hoping for a miracle hire
Firing Whizenhunt doesn't make sense unless he refuses to give up control of player personnel decisions to (hopefully) the new GM. He's proven his system can win at the championship level, but he made serious errors in judgment when building the roster the last few years. Plenty of great coaches are bad GMs, and many don't even try. So either give Whiz a good GM so he can focus on coaching or let him go and win somewhere else.
