On Sunday, Brian Hoyer will become the fourth quarterback to start for the Arizona Cardinals this season, marking the first time since 2008 that a team (Cleveland Browns) has started four different players under center over a 16-game span.

While Arizona's game against the San Francisco 49ers will be Hoyer's first professional start, one ESPN analyst believes the move says less about the former Michigan State standout and more about John Skelton, the Cardinals' Week 1 starter.

"I guess [the decision to start Hoyer] tells you how bad they must think of John Skelton," ESPN analyst John Clayton told Arizona Sports 620's Doug & Wolf Thursday. "What has happened to John Skelton?

"He was good enough to beat out Kevin Kolb for the starting job, now he is in nowhere land."

Skelton has not played since Arizona's historic 58-0 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 14. In that contest, Skelton was abysmal, throwing four interceptions on 22 attempts in the first half. It didn't help matters that the former fifth-round pick also lost a costly fumble.

In seven games this season, Skelton threw for 1,132 yards to go along with two touchdowns and nine interceptions. Skelton largely entered the 2012 season as the starting quarterback after leading Arizona to four wins in its final five games a year ago.

He was inactive for the team's game against the Chicago Bears in Week 16, signaling just how far he's fallen out of favor with Ken Whisenhunt.

While colleague Ron Jaworski raved about Hoyer's potential as an NFL starter, Clayton thinks the move will be a temporary one for the Cardinals.

John Clayton joined us today to discuss Brian Hoyer getting the start this week for the Cardinals and if there will be some big changes for the Cards during the off-season.

"I think he was an efficient backup quarterback, one who can do some good things," said Clayton. "On a one-game basis it's okay, but look at the team he is facing [in San Francisco].

Hoyer, who comes into Sunday's game with 62 career pass attempts to his name, will face the 49ers' No. 4 ranked passing defense. The unit has already beaten Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Matt Stafford in 2012.

    John Skelton
Fitz, what were you thinking? He had potential to be a good QB? Laughing my freaking butt off! Let me tell you something about "if you believe then you can achieve" QB's with "potential". You either have or it or you don't. And I heard Trent Dilfer say it best on one of his MNF pre game coverages. He said "you either wake up in the morning with it or you don't." . He was referencing "talent". And its true as blue. You either have it or you dont. When it comes to QB's you can tell whether they have the "it factor" by their 2nd game.

    This is Hoyers 2nd game
In my opinion, we'll be able to tell if this kid has talent or not by this game. I think we're all done with guys with "potential" that turn into projects then turn into disappointments.

No more hating on John Skelton, thank you
Being on Whiz's "bad" list says more for Skelton than against him. Skelton's won more games for this team than Kolb has in the last two seasons. He played well in the Packer game, only to be humiliated in Atlanta by being pulled before the end of the first quarter - and we were WINNING. Then Whiz allows Lindley to give the game away to the Falcons. Whatever potential/talent Skelton had was destroyed by Whisenhunt's failures as a HC.

    hating on John Skelton (cont)
Whisenhunt has only set him up for failure this season - ultimately capping it off by making him the sacrificial lamb in the Seahawk drubbing which Whiz knew was coming. Is Skelton a SB winning QB? Obviously not right now. Hopefully he will go to another team next season who actually had the coaching talent to develop him as a good NFL QB.

Start with a good O line.
Whiz said it, we need a QB that can cover up our other defiecencies and not create more problems. That is a tall order for any QB! Good offensive line, a good running game and we can improve the QB play. How can you truly evaluate our QB talent without those ingredients?

    finger pointing
With no OL or running game it will never matter who is under center. In all fairness Kolb, Skelton and Lindley did not get a fair chance to show case their talents. I see why Payton said no to AZ.

    ITS A FACT!!!
Whisenhunt has clearly shown that he cannot buld the offensive unit. His Super Bowl year where mostly veterans, Russ Grimm as never benn able to build a good much less a great O-Line. Not being able to develope young offensive players: John Skelton (QB) descent year in 2011, Rob Houlser (TE) (Sports Illustrated/" much like Adrian Hernandez type (Patriots). Micheal Floyed (WR-R) had a dis-appointing year.

    Kolb Played Tremendous
What short memories you all have. Kolb was ranked about 7th in league in QBR with no O line and 27 sacks!!! Id say thats pretty incredible. He had 8 TDs and only 3 ints. I said at the beginning of training camp Kolb was the best! The question is why didnt Wiz? And everyone else? What wouldve happened if Kolb was designated the man like Harbaugh did with Alex Smith in San Fran? Id say We wouldnt be talking about Wiz head. Leadership is everything!
