Arizona Cardinals' cornerback Patrick Peterson has had his share of ups and downs in his sophomore campaign this season.

But in the Cardinals' much-needed 38-10 win over the Lions on Sunday, Peterson put his exceptional talent on display and showed once again why he is one of the top young corners in the game.

Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt had nothing but praise for Peterson's performance, which included a tremendous effort against arguably the league's top wideout.

"There was a lot said last week about him wanting to compete against Calvin Johnson and that's putting it out there," Whisenhunt told Arizona Sports 620's Doug & Wolf Monday. "Then you gotta back it up and just seeing him respond the way he does. He's a very confident young man, which is something that you like but when you're that way you have to back it up."

Peterson let his actions on the field do the talking against Johnson and the Lions on Sunday. He picked off a Matthew Stafford pass intended for Johnson in the second quarter, which paved the way for a crucial Beanie Wells touchdown.

The 22-year-old now has seven picks on the season, which is tied for second-best in the NFL. He also had a team-high seven tackles in Arizona's win over Detroit.

Whisenhunt said Peterson's success on Sunday stemmed from the impressive work ethic and mentality his young corner abides by week after week.

"He does it not with his words but with his actions, how he studies, how he works on the field, how he reacts with his teammates -- all important qualities some of the best players in the game that I've ever seen [Peterson] has a lot of those qualities," Whisenhunt explained.

The Cardinals knew they had something special in Peterson from the start when he burst on the scene his rookie season, establishing himself as an explosive punt returner and earning a Pro Bowl selection.

Still, for Peterson to solidify his status among the game's elite cornerbacks, he'll have to continue to perform at a high level for many years to come.

"The only thing [Peterson] doesn't have is he doesn't have it over time," Whisenhunt said. "That's something that he's got to prove consistently over time. But, he's off to a great start."

    This article is BS
Megatron had a huge game with well over a hundred yards passing yardage (10 catches for 121yds and a long catch of 30 yards. Spin PP21 having a monster day all you want and it still smells like a turd. He did good with his pick but to say that he even 'controlled' Megatron is a lie. Fitzgerald would absolutely kill for Megatrons "supposed bad day" against the Cards. It is pathetic when we lie or try to lie to ourselves. I for one won't be drinking this particular strain of kool-aid.

Gotta call it 4 what it is
BUT, Megatron had no TDs in this game. AND, there were a few plays where Gay was covering him. So 21 wasnt covering him "all day" himself. They were switching off. I can relate to what this article is saying in the following sense: Cards total offense was like 160 yards and no TDs (ALL THE TIME). Megatron had 121 yards to himself, but, no TD. The Cards defense bent but didnt break to Megatron. In my opinion, they didnt shut him down by any sense of the word, but, they had a good game against him. Overall, good performance.

    Would have to look
We would have to look at the game again and pick apart when Peterson was covering Megatron or when the Cards did double coverage with Rhodes and Gay or just single covered him with Gay. If Megatron got most of his yards off of Gay and Rhodes and Peterson held him to very small nuumbers then it would mean Peterson had an amazing game. Looking at just the stats won't give you the view you need.

    Stats
Well if you look at the stats it looks like Megatron won. If you look at the amount of attempts Stafford had, no sacks on him, & the fact that the Lions were forced to throw being down most of the game. PP had a pick & was solid all day. I'll take the 1 pick vs 0 TD's & the W!

    8 of 10 over PP
According to ESPN's Mike Sando (@espn_NFCWest) "On a side note, Pro Football Focus notes that Johnson caught eight of those 10 passes for 101 yards against Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson. That was a higher figure than I expected from watching the game without charting Johnson's receptions. It really did seem like the Cardinals fared well against Johnson." So Johnson got over 100 yards against PP.

Thanks for the "new" info. PP21 allowed Megatron 100 yards on 8 catches. Extend that proficiency out over 16 games and you see where I am going when I say PP21 DID NOT control Megatron. If Megatron had 100 yd.s/game that is 1600 in a year, which is FANTASTIC. Ken better stop Publicly lying to PP21 about how great he is or PP21 might start believing this line of BS and never reach his REAL potential. PP21 talked about being a shutdown CB prior to this matchup, he even said it would be a measuring stick. Megatron had a fantastic day against him; measure that PP.

you know what i think? i think you guys are just a bunch of jerks trying to prove statistics wrong! pp is a good young player and we are lucky to have him and he deserves praises! and Larry has already proven himself as a great player! He would be great if he had a quarterback that wasn't throwin the ball 3 shades to the wind! Please take your positive comments to another team! bandwagoneers!

    WORD
PP is becoming the CB we all thought he would become. The Lions throw CJ the ball nonstop so of course he'll have his numbers but that is why the Lions are garbage. Houston stopped throwing the ball to Aj constantly & they are becoming a more well rounded team. We need consistent QB play & we'll be solid! Our D deserves better!

    THE LIONS ARE GARBAGE
A Pop Warner team could have played the Lions! They Stink ! So when you beat a team of this caliber you really have no bragging rights at all ! The Lions stink as bad as the Cardinals so the field won the game. NEXT WEEEK Kenny needs to practice this speech: Who Remembers this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVIpHUyiuhE
