If Ken Whisenhunt's proverbial coaching seat was only lukewarm heading into Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks, it's certainly been notched up a few degrees after the Arizona Cardinals suffered their worst loss in franchise history, 58-0.

The organization hasn't been shy about letting go of a head coach following an embarrassing defeat. After Arizona was routed 48-7 by the Dallas Cowboys back in October 2000, team president Bill Bidwill and general manager Bob Ferguson fired head coach Vince Tobin a day later and replaced him with defensive coordinator Dave McGinnis.

While Whisenhunt didn't suffer the same fate Monday, he was asked about his job status and the relationship he has with team management.

"I've talked to Michael [Bidwill] every day," Whisenhunt said. "We talk about all kinds of things. You know I control what I can control.

"Like I said, I understand this business and I have a job to do. I feel disappointed we haven't done it."

With their loss on Sunday, the Cardinals have now been eliminated from postseason contention for the third consecutive year. And while Whisenhunt built up plenty of goodwill within the organization after leading the Cardinals to back-to-back division titles in 2008 and 2009, that seems like an afterthought these days in the midst of a nine-game losing streak.

Although it would be easy for the Cardinals coach to deflect the negative attention he and his woeful team have garnered around the Valley in recent weeks, Whisenhunt admitted Monday that the fans deserve better.

"My greatest disappointment is for our fans," said Whisenhunt. "They've been so good to me and to us. I feel like I've let them down from not being able to do what we wanted to do."

After the 2012 season, Whisenhunt still has one year remaining on his current contract for $5.5 million.

In 93 games as Arizona's head coach, Whisenhunt is 44-49.

Id hate to see him go
but Id love to see him leave. Theres nothing wrong with trying but coming up short. He and the Cardinals must go in different directions now. He's going to step into a OC role where the offense is already built and ready to go. He couldnt "build up", and that is what we need. Someone that can "build up" this team for contention.

Who would want to coach here???
I don't see the bidwells firing Whiz, then paying him $5M...then breaking the bank to pay a top coach & staff. That is what a highly coveted coach like Gruden, Saban, or Kelly will require. None of those coach's will work with Graves as GM. AZ is a small market, add to that the fact there is no franchise QB, that makes the AZ coaching job the worst available. Hope they lock down Horton, or just stick with Whiz get him a proper QB Graves!

First, I do not believe AZ is considered a small market. AZ at minimum is middle-market. Second, I believe AZ fans have crossed a threshold. We as a whole are no longer satisfied with being mediocre. Whiz has to go, and he ultimately has himself to blame. He and Kurt Warner are responsible for the change in AZ and Cardinals fans are no longer satisfied with a .500 record. We want to win. We want to get back to the Super Bowl. Whiz, clearly is not the guy who can get us back there.

    Continuation
He cannot develop a QB. He cannot evaluate a QB successfully. Now, the Bidwill's have historically been cheap but ever since Michael Bidwill took over I think it is fair to say he is more willing to open up his checking book. Look at the last couple years and the big contracts he gave out to keep the future of our D intact.

Leinart, Kolb, Max Hall, Derick Anderson
John Skelton, Ryan Lindley. Then you have the "Grimm" back story of a friendship to far. Then you have the major loss Haley who was never replaced. Whiz toke those duties initially before finalizing Miller into that role. Then their is the loss of Levi and who is brought in to help replace him? No one. How about the loss of Beenie and then Ryan Williams, no FA pick-ups their either. Lose Kolb with an injury and we brought in Zero candidates for better success. Not bringing in talent to help Whiz is telling.
