Ken Whisenhunt is the most successful coach in Arizona Cardinals history, having led the team to Super Bowl XLIII as well as two NFC West championships.

However, with his team mired in an eight-game losing streak, many think it's time for the Cardinals to part with their head coach.

ESPN NFL insider John Clayton is not of that school of thought.

"The mistake would be to let him go," Clayton told Arizona Sports 620's Doug and Wolf Thursday.

Clayton said Whisenhunt has proven to be a successful coach when given a quality quarterback, which he has not had since Kurt Warner retired following the 2009 season.

Arizona's post-Warner struggles have led Whisenhunt's record as head coach to dip to 44-48, and after three straight years of missing the playoffs, it's possible the coach's best times in the desert are behind him.

And while Clayton admitted he does not understand why Whisenhunt replaced John Skelton with Ryan Lindley a few weeks ago in Atlanta, he remains steadfast with his belief a coaching change would be one of the worst things the Cardinals could do.

"The mistake would be letting this coach go," he said. "He's too good of a coach, he knows offense, players play for him."

John Clayton joins to guys to talk about the NFL. Why does John say it would be a mistake for the Cardinals to fire Ken Whisenhunt? He also says why it might be premature to hire Ray Horton as a head coach. And, why does John say it was the right move for Rex Ryan to start Mark Sanchez, again? Plus, John Clayton tells us how he feels about possibly eliminating the Kick-off?
Clayton also pointed to the hire of Ray Horton to run the team's defense as a feather in Whisenhunt's cap, which is interesting since the defensive coordinator may be in line to replace Whisenhunt should a change take place.

While Horton has done a great job with the Cardinals' defense, Clayton says the 52-year-old is not quite ready to run a team.

"I think it'd be too quick to make a move," he said of Horton being promoted. "He's only been a coordinator a year and 12 weeks, and I think you settle into that role and you try to at least put more time in.

"If you rush to a job you may not necessarily be successful."

Clayton said too many owners these days are willing to take chances on coordinators with hope they can learn how to be a head coach while already on the job.

"That would be the case with Ray."

    Agree completely
Whiz is a good coach that would be snapped up immediately by another team if let go. He's made mistakes, but the players play hard for him, he HAS been successful here with decent QB play, and there've been zero of the locker room problems that have plagued other losing coaches. Give Whiz one more year, get a decent OC that can develop QBs, and let's see what he can do with a healthy Kolb at QB (with a high draft pick behind him), a healthy Levi and Massie at OT, and a healthy Williams at RB.

    let him go
he hasnt been able to get the offense off of the ground, literally... for the past 3 yrs weve been 3rd to last in all categories. yea maybe his system works with the right personnel. but considering he misjudged his personnel for his own system and was too stubborn to adjust the past 3 yrs, doesnt make me confident he can do it in the next 3. He'd basically have to hire a run 1st OC and go against everything he stands for (passing 1st). of course hed do it if his job depends on it. but his inability to do it on his own is concerning.

    Whiz
What, now John Fox is a great coach? No, he has Peyton Manning. All good teams in the NFL are there because they have a good QB. We have a lot of problems on the team, along with injuries, that aren't the coaches fault. It takes time to build a good team. He has earned the right to coach one more year. Anyone who disagrees is a fool.

Then Graves would have to go
If Whiz does stay then the Cards need to hire a new GM who is in charge of the draft and free agency. Let Whisenhunt focus on coaching the team and have someone else pick the players. It is not Whisenhunt's coaching ability that is in question, it is his choice of players through the draft and FA. He came to a team with great players and his coaching style improved the team dramatically. He would also need to bring in a new OC and OL coach. Just like Horton he should bring them in from a team that has a great O-line and potent offense (Texans, Patriots).

    This would never happen but...
Dennis Green would make an awesome GM. Look at all the talent he added to AZ in his 3 years. He has always been a great talent evaluator, but he lacked great coaching skills. I am surprised he has never became a GM for any team. He might be a little crazy, but at least he would be behind the scenes.

    job responsibilities
ive always been a bit perplexed as to the teams responsibilities. from what i have gathered lately though, i think graves is actually excelling at his job (which is the business side of things - not a traditional gm picking players). he has gotten players signed to contracts that are cap friendly and in timely manner. steve keim would be who the majority of scouting/player decisions falls on along with Whiz. that said, he was just promoted to his current position this year, so its entirely possible it will take a year or two to get the ship functioning 100%

    1 more year
Keep Whiz. Fire Graves. Fire Grimm. Restructure Kolb's contract to have him back next year and see if he can stay healthy. Draft heavy on O-lineman and a possible developmental QB (like a Colin Kapernick, Ryan Mallet, Russell Wilson). Give Whiz one year with the QB he wanted (Kolb) with a decent O-line. If he still can't do it then, it is time for Whiz to go. But after his past success here and bad luck with injuries this year, I feel he deserves one more shot.

    All of you Whiz supporters
Need to divest yourself of the Kurt Warner era. Whiz excelled because of Kurt, Haley as OC, not the other way around. Whiz is too stubborn to be a successful coach unless all the parts are there. The only way Whiz should stay is if his control is limited. Bring in an OC that has complete control and will work the offense to the players strengths not force an offense on them. Benching of Skelton and running Lerod up the middle on 3-1 and 4-1 shows his Stubborness to the teams detriment.

    BS
All this talk about Whiz being a good head coach is only because of Warner is BS. Yes, Warren was great but you tell me a head coach that was great without a great quarterback......... Even the great Bill Belichick wasn't that great until Brady came along.
