Until the Arizona Cardinals solidify their quarterback position, pretty much every time one who can successfully complete a pass will be linked to them.

Wednesday ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested Michael Vick, and Thursday it was Alex Smith's turn to be mentioned as a possible target for Arizona.

"Arizona has a playoff-caliber defense, they have some parts on offense, they have as bad a quarterback situation as there is in the league," ESPN's Mike Greenberg said on Mike & Mike in the Morning. "If you're Ken Whisenhunt, are you calling Michael Vick or are you calling Alex Smith?"

Vick is in the middle of a poor season for the Philadelphia Eagles, as he's completing just 59 percent of his passes while throwing 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He's also fumbled the ball 10 times.

Smith, on the other hand, has played well for the San Francisco 49ers, completing 70 percent of his passes while tossing 13 touchdowns against five interceptions. He's fumbled just four times this season and has a QB rating of 104.1. In fact, the only reason Smith would even be available is the emergence of Colin Kaepernick, a second-round pick who coach Jim Harbaugh seems to favor.

While Vick and Smith will not be the only players available to the Cardinals, they seem to be the most intriguing and most different.

"Here's what it comes down to," ESPN's Mike Golic said. "Some coaches go the safe route, some are willing to take the chance.

"With these two quarterbacks, we know what that is. Alex Smith is the safe route and Michael Vick is the chance."

Golic added that NFL head coaches have egos, which is not surprising, but noted it could lead someone to think they'll be rewarded for taking a risk on a talent like him.

"Even though Vick hasn't shown a whole lot as of late and doesn't make it through seasons, there are coaches that say 'I can get us to win with him.'"

Golic said someone with potential like Vick "puts stars in coaches' eyes," and he admitted a player like Smith works best when you have excellent talent around him.

"You have to have a better running game, Arizona doesn't have that," he said. "You have to have a great defense. Arizona has a good defense, not a great defense."

    Doesn't Matter...
... who the QB is or may be, the O-Line will still be poor, the QB will be running for his life and the RB's won't be running much at all. It starts up front with a line that has lost 3 starters this year, has two rookies on the ends and all this talk about another QB is rather pointless right now.

He hit it right on the head. Smith does good when he has a great defense and a great run game. Things to be opptomistic about for Smith: We have a good defense (they're closer to being great than they are to being good). Obviously the Tackles and depth of our O Line have to be upgraded but we have a homerun hitter in LSH starting to emerge. I wish Whiz would stick with LSH as starter to see if he can carry the load as a starter, bcuz Im very impressed with how he has ran in his starts this year where he got 100+ yards.

    LSH
has the burst and moves of a starting RB. He can juke, cut, and catch the ball out of the backfield very well. Weve seen plays where he hits the gap between the center and guards with authority and keeps the legs driving. Obviously hes not that strong but thats where a backup back like Beanie Wells comes in and bends the defense so LSH can go in and break them. We have talented recievers. All this team is missing is a offensive line and QB. Bidwills "commitment to winning" memo is now moot. Him and Graves havent brought in anybody via FA that can help this team win. That blame falls on them.

    Golic's a moron
Smith is absolutely not safe. He was awful for years, then everyone got excited when he reached Trent Dilfer-esque mediocrity. And, by the way, just about every Qb works best when they have excellent talent around them.

Depends how Lindley looks the rest of the season
If Lindley gets to start the final 5 games we can see what he might be able to do. The O-line has improved over the last month in pass blocking and run blocking. Both Skelton and Lindley had time to throw in the last few games. Luck had the entire off season with all the 1st team reps and he threw 3 INTs in his first start, so I will wait until after 3 starts to really look at Lindley's performance.

    QB
I honestly do not see a QB that is going into free agency that I could 100% say is better than Kolb. I refuse to write Kolb off until he has a true chance behind a line that can keep him upright.

If choice is restructure Kolb's deal or take a QB in FA (or trade a pick for Smith), I might just stick with Kolb. With Levi coming back, Massie getting better, Potter getting valuable experience to be a backup, and if they draft a G (to replace Snyder, he's terrible), this line could be good enough next year. I'd be satisfied to keep Kolb, let Skelton go, draft a QB in rd 1, 2 or 3, and let Lindley and the draft pick compete for #2.

I refuse to write Kolb off either
I agree to give him another year behind a upgraded O Line. But, the Cards have to seriously upgrade this line! Im concerned that the Bidwills will not allow Graves to upgrade this line via FA, so, I see them getting O Linemen in the draft. They need to also seriously consider getting a high profile QB via FA or draft as well because Kolb's injury history is definately concerning and we need our backup QB ready to go if we need him (Kolbs injury history says we will). Whether it was Ownership, Management, or Whiz's fault for the lack of talent on offense, IT CANT hold us back anymore.

    Make things happen
The answer should be grab the best O-Lineman available, probably a guard to replace Adam Snyder and then either trade up to get Geno Smith if possible without giving up too much and get Kolb to restructure his deal and have Lindly, Kolb and Geno Smith battle it out and see who looks best. I'm all for a healthy Kevin Kolb, but that just doesn't exist. Same reason there is no way we take Mike "Concussions" Vick. If there is a QB to be had for that has skills it would have to be something like Tony Romo or someone who doesn't have a contract as of yet.
