Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley completed 31-of-52 passes for 312 yards and four interceptions in his first NFL start Sunday, which came in a 31-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns, and while there were some positive moments, Lindley very much showed he is a work-in-progress as far as being ready to lead an NFL team.

However, Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday if Kevin Kolb is unable to return from his injury Sunday, the former San Diego State signal caller will once again get the nod.

"We stay with Ryan," the coach said. "Let's start the thing off by saying you can't have those interceptions, but in the first half I thought that he did a really nice job.

"He moved in the pocket, was decisive, managed it, made some good throws."

Whisenhunt pointed to the team's three scoring drives in the first 30 minutes of football, which saw the Cardinals take a 17-14 lead into the intermission.

"I felt that we did a lot of good things," he said.

Things went south in the second half, though, as the Rams dialed up the pressure and made Lindley try to beat them with his arm.

That he couldn't Sunday is understandable, and the coach said no one was more upset about the mistakes than the quarterback himself.

"One of the things that you have to learn about a quarterback is that when you get into those heat of the moment type things how you've got to respond," Whisenhunt said.

The mistakes, the coach added, are just part of the growing pains, and it is important to see what Lindley does in a real game compared to just working in practice.

"You understand with a young player," he said. "Look, we've got a lot of young players that are playing. They make mistakes.

"Sometimes they're not magnified like they are with the quarterback because he's got the ball, and that's what he's got to understand."

If Kolb is out, run with Lindley. It is very aparrent that the Skelton project has run its course. If by your third year you still are misreading and inaccurate, it's not going to improve. See what you've got in Lindley. He can be maybe a serviceable #2 next year if you get the rookie stupids out of him now. Next year we'll run with Kolb, Lindley, and probably a FA backup qb type. This draft isn't very good for qb's, but maybe in a year or two we can trade up if we need to like the Skins did.

    What A Shame
Let me start by saying Skelton is not much of an upgrade. This is getting out of hand entirely. He stunk just as he did in Preseason. All Whiz and This Organization is doing is silently admitting we should have drafted Russ Wilson or any other quarterbacks not name John Skelton or Ryan Lindley. This offense was garbage with Kolb under center worse with Skelton under center and straight pitiful and hard to watch with Lindley under center. Lindley has had one or two good drives out of 15 or so and you think you can lie to us Whiz? We watch the same tape you do in high quality HD.

    How can anyone trust Whiz?
His judgment has been less than stellar so far this season...Lindley had 4 INT's. How can a season ticket holder drive to a game, walk, stand in line, pay good money for anything...knowing that we have a less that quality starter at QB? THIS IS WIN TIME....NOT LETS TRYOUT TIME!!!!

    Best Move
This is probably the best move at this point. No team wants to go out and play for a draft pick but our season is pretty much done. We let Lindley show what he can do for the rest of the season and go from there.

we are done for the year not makeing the playoffs so why not start him and see if he is going to work or if we need a new qb next year in the draft

    On the bright side
The OL has looked a whole lot better the last few weeks. I've been harping on the missteps with resigning Grimm and passing on FA's and draft picks along the line, but I gotta admit, Lindley and Mr. Boise St. are making the line look less pathetic. It is draft pick positioning time so with only 6 teams having worse records than the Cards, a shot at the top OT could be in the balance. Only problem is if Whiz is still around he'd draft another WR or RB.

I know, right, like when he drafted Levi Brown and passed on Adrian Peterson... oh wait. People have such short term memories. Whiz drafts for need (line) over best talent and never hears the end of it, whiz drafts for talent over need (still line) and he gets attacked for that too. Guy can't win. Any OTs whiz could have taken in the 1st round this year would have been Levi Brown like reaches, and with out a 2nd round pick there wasn't much more whiz could do. Many actually thought he'd take massie in the 3rd round, it was incredible patience that allowed us to not reach on him too.

    Not that it matters ...but.....
Seen a report that Ray Lewis was coming back from a torn tricep injury and thought to myself..wasn't this the same injury Levi Brown had? Ray's injury happened a couple of weeks ago and Levi's happened like preseason.....what's wrong with this picture?
