CIAA tournament to remain in Charlotte for 6 years
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — CIAA commissioner Jacqie Carpenter has announced the conference's men's and women's basketball tournaments will remain in Charlotte for six more years.
Carpenter also announced Monday at a news conference the CIAA will be moving its headquarters to Charlotte in the near future.
The tournament has been held in Charlotte since 2006 but the contract expired following the completion of this year's tournament, which wrapped up this past weekend.
Under the agreement, games will continue to be played at Time Warner Cable Arena, home of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats.
As part of the agreement, the city of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority will provide various benefits, including $1.4 million in funding annually to the CIAA. That money will be distributed among the 12 conference colleges and universities.
