The Arizona Wildcats had a tough weekend series in Tucson against the 14th-ranked Rice Owls.
The visitors from Houston ended up taking two of three games in the series, but UA’s win — a 7-6 triumph on Saturday — is one they’ll be talking about for a long time in the Old Pueblo.
The ‘Cats were down a run heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. Scott Kingery led off the inning by reaching on an error. Kevin Newman followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt, but another error on Rice ensured everyone was safe.
Zach Gibbons would also lay down a bunt, which advanced the runners 90 feet each, and another error allowed Kingery to score to tie the game at 6-6. Riley Moore followed and, you guessed it, reached on an error — the fourth of the inning for the Owls. Newman advanced to third on the play. Bobby Dalbec grounded out for the second out of the inning.
With Cody Ramer at the plate, Newman got a great jump down the third-base line on Rice pitcher Matt Ditman and swiped home to give Arizona an improbable 7-6 win.
