Sometimes one play is the difference between a win and a loss.

During Sunday's 31-17 loss to the Packers, I believe it was one play call that proved costly. Late in the third quarter, the Cardinals trailed 24-14 and faced a 3rd-and-1 from the Packers' 2-yard line. For some reason either Mike Miller or Ken Whisenhunt -- or maybe both -- felt that giving LaRod Stephens-Howling the ball on a run up the middle was a good call.

Three problems with that: The Packers stacked the line. The Cardinals offensive line still can't run block. And, Stephens-Howling is hardly a power back. Needless to say he was stuffed for no gain, and Arizona settled for a short Jay Feely field goal to pull within 24-17.

Two plays later, it was 31-17 after Aaron Rodgers connected with Tom Crabtree on a 72-yard touchdown pass. Neither team scored again.

I'm not saying the Cardinals would have won had they scored a touchdown instead of a field goal on that possession, but this team has essentially no margin for error. So that if we're going to get on players for making bad reads or dropping passes, coaches can't afford to make calls that have very little chance of working -- especially on third down.

I do think the coaches did a much better job of getting Larry Fitzgerald more involved this week. He had six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown, after combining for just nine receptions the last two weeks. I also thought they put John Skelton in a much better position to succeed than they did last week ago against San Francisco. They didn't give up on the run game, and in the second half, we saw a much more poised, confident and accurate Skelton than we've seen so far.

That being said, the Cardinals offense is still bad and the defense is starting to spring a few leaks.

I'd be lying if I said the bye week couldn't be coming at a better time. The Cardinals could have used the time off three weeks ago.

Unfortunately, the Atlanta Falcons -- undefeated as of Sunday afternoon -- await the Cardinals in two weeks. If the Cardinals have any hopes whatsoever of playing meaningful games in December, then pulling off what will be considered a major upset at the Georgia Dome is the only option.

It's on the players to quit missing tackles, making bad reads, dropping passes and whiffing on blocks. It's on the coaches to make better calls when the offense actually has a chance to put points on the board.

And changed the play at the line. I have to disagree with you on that one. But u r right on once Skelton plays better, his WRs suck! Its hard to tell if their improving because they are so inefficient and inconsistant at different positions each week. They are never on the same page offensively as a team - players and coaches both. The defense still sucks at tackling. They were so good at it the first 2 games of the season, then their tackling effeciency has been steadily declining to what we're seeing now. This isn't looking good.

    Agreed
You are not going to win another game if you insist on running LSH as your only back. I cannot even watch anymore and did not watch when I saw another game with LSH running up the middle and going nowhere. Pass the run, hit receivers that can get open for five yards. Unbelievable, One game with insisting on running up the middle when you do not have a back suited for that play I can let slide, but now at least three games with the same awful game plan and not just admitting you do not have a run game, you do not give Powell a chance to run, and not just passing the ball for short yardage.

    Bad All Around
The defense allowed over 170 yards rushing .... Everyone knows what the offense is going to do before they do it .... John Skelton's quarterback rating is the lowest ranked among all qualifying NFL quarterbacks .... and the wide receivers coudn't catch a sticky turd .... What more can I say ....

The question to me now is:
Do you blow up this team, starting with the head shed? Whiz is a .500 coach. Always will be. There is a ton of talent on this team, but some gaping holes that no team could overcome. That falls on the staff. I guess the question is, should Whiz be on the hot seat? I was a supporter, but after watching another debacle (O-line this year) I want someone else.

    Sean Payton
The Cardinals should ship a box of Arizona Caridnals visors to the doorstep of Sean Payton. He's going to be the hottest free agent this spring. It's obvious how talented he is after the Saints imploded without him

    This sentence nailed it:
"So if we're going to get on players for making bad reads or dropping passes, coaches can't afford to make calls that have very little chance of working -- especially on third down." Just add "...and especially in goal line situations."

    Play Calling Has Been Awful
Making Todd Haley look like a head coach. All The Players and Coaches that they have brought in with Pittsburgh Steeler ties and they slept on Bruce Arians who by the way is leading the Indianapolis Colts to a playoff chase as the Interim Head Coach. Thats an offensive head they should have at least kicked the tires on. Maybe Whiz knew he was a threat to his job. Mike Miller has got to go asap at least use some trickery I mean you obviously dont call plays to the strenght of what your workin with do something.

    Bad play calling
I have watched as the calls are made that have no chance of working. How many times do we run routes on third down that are not even close to the first down marker? However there have been many dropped passes this season and recently poorly throw passes to wide open recievers. We need a new O line coach, and a new quarterbacks coach and someone who can call plays like Todd H. did. Yes the D still lacks in tackling but you have to wonder how it plays in their heads
